The Outlaw Ocean is a harrowing read. Ian Urbina is an investigative journlist who spent years working on stories of crime at sea, and in this book he gives us a front row seat to some of the most dangerous and inhumane things he encountered — slavery, poaching, and violence are common topics. Reading this opened my eyes to a part of the world that I have never spent much time thinking about. The treatment of the men who bring in the cheap fish that we take for granted across much of the world is appalling, and the lack of enforcement of the rule of law is depressing. Great journalism shines a light on injustice that would otherwise go unnoticed, and The Outlaw Ocean does that well.
